Sage Therapy Intern Program

Empower, Educate and Transform

About the program

At Sage Therapy, education and mentorship for the next generation of therapists are paramount. The mental health field is quickly evolving, and we believe that clinician training must keep pace. Our Internship Program creates a unique opportunity for emerging clinicians to create their own professional path, in a safe, inclusive, and collaborative environment.

We provide support and guidance from our staff of over 80 therapists, consultation from a dozen monthly peer-lead groups, hundreds of hours of on-demand and in-person training, on top of two hours of individual and group supervision each week. You bring professionalism, integrity, strong organizational skills, and openness to growth.

Our internship program is open to final year masters students studying counseling, clinical social work, marriage and family therapy, and art therapy. Our program is hybrid, meaning students will have the option to provide both virtual and in person services.

Sage is currently a contracted site with Adler University, Loyola University Chicago, Northern Illinois University, Northwestern University, Northeastern Illinois University, and the University of Chicago. We have trusted relationships with these programs and have been able to successfully ensure that all students complete their specific program requirements for graduation.

Our goal is to train students that we would be interested in bringing on as staff clinicians upon successful completion of their graduate training! We remain open to partnering with additional schools/programs.

There were so many opportunities to connect with others - both clinically and socially. As an intern, it can feel difficult to join in with the full time practitioners, but Sage staff always made me feel invited and included. I felt that there were always multiple avenues to take for guidance and supervision including the more direct route of supervisors as well as other clinicians who specialized in many different focuses.
Intern Class of 2022-2023
Sage did a great job of building up my client caseload where it felt manageable, but also paced me to ensure I met my hour requirements. I rarely worried about meeting my hours. If I was ever concerned, I knew I could reach out to my supervisor, intake, and leaders of the intern program to check and would be supported in adjusting my client work to meet my school's requirements.

Intern Class of 2023-2024
I started seeing clients in a very gentle manner, with a gradual increase in case load and a significant amount of support from supervision. I was really nervous about things like watching video recordings of my sessions with supervisors. Both supervisors I had were very kind and encouraging, and gave me constructive criticism while still always helping build my confidence. I also really appreciated being included in everything from staff wellness events to clinical consultations. I was able to be a part of the community and get to know a wide variety of clinicians.

I feel very lucky to have completed my internship here at Sage. I felt very included and supported throughout my time as an intern. I finished my internship with more than enough hours I needed while also being able to participate in things like group consultations and focusing on school work. Everyone from leadership to supervisors were patient and supportive. Group supervision was one of my favorite parts of the internship. This was the opportunity to share worries, victories and everything in between with your peers.

Intern Class of 2023-2024
The caseload I began with felt manageable and was thoughtfully increased over time, allowing me to build my skills and confidence without feeling overwhelmed as I took on more clients. This gradual approach made a significant difference in helping me feel capable and prepared. My supervisor was extremely supportive. Their encouragement, patience, and willingness to engage in problem-solving helped me grow both professionally and personally. Feeling so supported made it clear that continuing with the practice was the right choice.

The Sage Therapy Internship Program supports the development of well rounded clinicians and provides an experience that tends to the multifaceted components of working in the mental health field. Our priority is to provide our students with a wide range of opportunities to develop their clinical and professional skills in an outpatient private practice setting. The program is structured to encourage students to interact with a broad range of specializations and areas of clinical focus, while providing opportunities to apply the knowledge they have acquired in their respective programs. With the support and supervision of our fully licensed supervisors and directors, students will provide direct clinical services to clients by way of individual, couples, family and group therapy.

Students have access to the expertise of over 70 clinical staff, all of whom are eager to support the training and development of the next generation of mental health providers.

Our students are provided with weekly individual supervision, weekly group supervision, access to 10 different monthly consultation groups, and unlimited access to practice-led lunch-and-learns, trainings, and workshops.

Students will also be offered opportunities to engage in projects outside of direct clinical work, including content creation, blog writing, contributing to workshops and opportunities to learn about intake/billing operations.

The expected commitment for our internship is a minimum of 14 hours per week. This includes both direct and indirect hours, and will ensure successful completion of your academic program and the Sage program’s requirements. Student interns are provided a $500 stipend for participation in the internship program.
